Saving for a holiday 2

So you're thinking about a holiday.

Make sure you've got an idea of when you will be going on holidays by working through our Saving for a holiday tip 1

Once you know when you are going to take your holiday and whether it will be one longer trip or perhaps a couple  of shorter trips, you can start planning where you are going to go.

Most of us have plenty of places we dream about visiting and often the hard thing is working out where to go when you finally get some time off.

Now that you know roughly when you'll be going away and how long you can be away from home for, start a list of destinations that will fit in with your timeframe.

Thinking of a trip this time next year? Like warmer weather? Then start listing all of the places you want to visit closer to the equator or in the northern hemistphere to make the most of their summer and get away from our winter.

Love skiing but can only get time off at Christmas? Start a list with all the places you can visit at that time of year that have ski fields.

Need a short break but would prefer to stay close to home? Make a list of activities or places you could go that are within 1-2 days drive a couple of hours flight from home.

Once your lists are starting to take shape, you need to get busy with some internet searching and maybe visit a travel agent or two. Start researching your list of possible destinations to see which ones will make the short list.

The short list will be determined by those areas that you may become fixated on and will fit into the holiday budget. First off though, get as much information as you can from as many sources as possible on each of your possible destinations.

If you already know where you want to go, start looking up what things you want to see and do while you are there. Often getting to your destination is the easy part. Accommodation, local travel, sight-seeing and cultural activities can eat into your budget and time unless you know ahead of time which things are a must-see/do and which ones would be a nice added bonus if money and time permit.

Yep you're going to end up with a whole lot of lists by the end of this and thats ok, the better prepared you are, the more fun you can have when you get there knowing you have enough time and money to make the most of your trip. The last thing you want to do is find yourself on a once in a lifetime holiday and you've run out of money.

As for us well I really prefer the warmer weather but we both know we need a short break before summer will get here. So we're currently planning a weekend getaway next month to coincide with a short business trip I will be making. We are then looking at taking a couple of weeks once the weather warms up for a fishing/outdoorsy holiday.

The destination of the weekend getaway is partly determined by my commitments but alas we are now deciding whether we will just fly in/out or whether we can stretch it into a road trip to make it a bit more fun.

Have fun putting your lists together and keep a track of websites you visit and travel brochures you like as you'll need them for step 3, putting dollars to your trip.
